
US 116th Infantry Regiment, its companies were first assault wave to hit OMAHA Beach on morning of D-Day 6 June 1944, Allied invasion of Normandy-France.
116th landed in Dog One sector of Normandy and ran smack into prepared defenses of German 352nd Infantry Division. Allied intelligence failed to detect deployment this combat-experience German division from Eastern Front in April 1944.
Hence, instead of facing anticipated 4-battalion size enemy formation, Germans countered US 116th assault troopers with 8-battalion size combatants.
Initial American assault wave suffered about 90% casualties, in all US took over 2,000 casaulties on OMAHA Beach.
Despite Hollywood depictions of Omaha Beach landings, it actually made the least First-24-Hours significance to Normandy invasion contrasted with Americans at UTAH, and British/Canadians at SWORD, GOLD, JUNO beachheads.
