Kauz Do-217 J-2 | NJG1 FuG 202 Lichtenstein B/C radar




Do-217 J-2 night fighter, with WW2 German 4./NJG1 squadron intercepting British RAF night bombing raids against Axis military and civilian targets in western Europe.






"Kauz" was project name of converting Do-17 bomber airframe into Do-217 night-fighter role since it could carried heavy armaments & equipment including nose-mounted 4@MG151 cannons, 4@MG17 heavy machine guns, FuG 202 Lichtenstein B/C radar system.






WW2 Luftwaffe 4-letter system G9+HM denoted : 1) G9 for NJG1 night fighter wing 2) H was individual aircraft code, 3) M indicated 4th Staffel (squadron). Despite its technical innovation, Luftwaffe crews heavily criticized Do-217 sluggish performance as night interceptor, thus ended its production by 1942.
